Balloon Racket Triangle Rally
In groups of three, students keep a balloon in the air with short rackets, always sending it to the teammate on their right. They practice overhead and underhand strikes, body orientation, and teamwork while trying to beat the group's own rally record.
How to play
- Make groups of three and set each group in a cone triangle about 10 ft per side; each student stands by a cone with a mini racket and the group shares one balloon (2 min).
- Free round: the group keeps the balloon up without letting it touch the floor, one hit per person, in any direction (3 min).
- Ordered round: the balloon must always go to the teammate on the right; the hitter calls out the hit number and the group counts the streak (3 min).
- Mixed-stroke round: alternate one hit above the head and one below the waist; if the balloon drops, the count starts over at zero (3 min).
- Record round: each group gets three 1-minute attempts and writes its best streak on the whiteboard; groups that pass 20 hits widen their triangle by one step (3 min).
Rules
- Each player hits the balloon only once before passing it.
- No holding the balloon with a hand or resting it on the racket.
- Safety: hit only the balloon and stay by your cone so rackets don't clash with teammates.
Variations
Easier
Allow two touches per person, one to control and one to pass.
Standard
One touch per person, always passing to the right and counting the streak out loud.
Harder
Play with two balloons in the same group, one passed to the right and one to the left.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays seated or from a wheelchair and teammates send the balloon within reach.
- Autism or shyness: keep the same group for the whole activity and use picture cards showing the passing order.
- Lower coordination: use a bigger balloon or allow hitting with the hand before moving to the racket.
Learning goals
- Strike a slow-moving object with a racket while controlling height and direction.
- Turn the body toward the teammate who will receive.
- Work together as a group to improve a shared score.
Equipment for a class of 25
- balloons: 12
- mini rackets: 25
- cones: 27
Teacher tip
Blow up the balloons before class and keep spares, since a few will pop. Keep reminding students to hit the balloon up, not forward: that is the most common mistake at first.
