Balloon Dance: Guiding the Flight So It Never Lands
Each student keeps a balloon in the air using any body part and turns those touches into a continuous dance: the balloon decides direction, speed and level. Then, in trios, students compose a choreographic phrase in which the balloon passes from one body to another.
How to play
- Free exploration with music: keep the balloon up with hands, head, knees, back and feet without stopping (4 min).
- Quality cues: touch the balloon only with slow, wide movements, then with short impulses, then always from the floor (4 min).
- Trios with one balloon: compose a 32-count phrase in which the balloon passes through all three at least twice and there is a level change (7 min).
- Trios perform in two rounds; the audience watches which trios turned the touches into dance rather than a game (5 min).
Rules
- Check the space before chasing the balloon: avoiding collisions comes first.
- Do not step on or pop the balloon; if one bursts, pick up the pieces right away.
- Check beforehand whether anyone has a latex allergy; if so, use latex-free balloons.
Variations
Easier
The balloon may be held for a moment between touches.
Standard
Balloon always in the air and a 32-count trio phrase.
Harder
Two balloons per trio, and the same person may never touch one twice in a row.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: works seated with the balloon at torso height while the trio sends it accurately.
- Visual impairment: uses a large, high-contrast balloon with a small bell inside.
- Overweight or low fitness: alternates touches with breaks holding the balloon to recover.
Learning goals
- Turn a play action into movement with expressive intent.
- Adapt movement to the unpredictable path of an object.
- Compose a short choreographic phrase as a group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- balloons: 40
- speaker: 1
Teacher tip
Inflate balloons only three-quarters full: they float more slowly and are easier to control. Keep spares and a bag for scraps.
