Ball Play Stations for Little Ones
A circuit of four object-play stations that small groups rotate through: toss into boxes, roll into hoops, bounce and catch, and keep balloons in the air. It reviews the object skills kids have learned and lets each child practice at their own pace.
How to play
- Before class, set up four stations with a picture sign each: 1) toss beanbags into boxes; 2) roll balls into hoops; 3) bounce and catch; 4) keep balloons up (2 min).
- Walk the group through the stations and demonstrate each task for a few seconds, without long explanations (2 min).
- Four groups of five, each with a color, start at a station. Everyone practices at once, with equipment for every child (3 min per station).
- On one tambourine tap, kids put the equipment down; on two taps, they walk like a train to the next station (clockwise).
- Repeat until every group has been to all four stations (12 min total).
- Finish: in a circle, each child points to their favorite station and tells what was hardest (2 min).
Rules
- At each station, do the task on the picture.
- One tap, put it down; two taps, move to the next station.
- Equipment stays at its station.
- Walk and stay in your group's space.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use three stations of 4 minutes, and the teacher stays with the group that needs the most help.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, use four stations of 3 minutes.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, give each station two levels: close and far, big and small.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: every station has a seated version (low box, hoop on a table, slow-bouncing ball).
- Autism: show the station order with a photo strip and give a one-minute warning before each change.
- Skill levels: each station has equipment in different sizes so every child can choose a challenge.
Learning goals
- Practice tossing, rolling, bouncing, and tapping objects.
- Follow a station rotation using sound signals.
- Choose and adjust their own level of challenge.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soft balls: 10
- balloons: 8
- bean bags: 15
- hoops: 5
- cardboard boxes: 3
- tambourine: 1
Teacher tip
Get an aide if you can; with 3-year-olds, one extra adult makes a big difference. Set up ahead so class time is all play.
