Balanced Teams: The Selection Committee Builds the Squads
A student committee watches basketball skill stations, builds four teams balanced by skill, gender and friendships, and tests them in games, adjusting if needed. It builds decision-making and fairness.
How to play
- Choose a committee of 4 volunteers and explain the criteria: mixed skill levels on each team, boys and girls spread out and nobody separated from their support group. Data are confidential and recorded with codes, never names in plain view (3 min).
- Four 2.5-minute stations: zigzag dribble, wall passes, shooting from three marked spots and 1v1; each committee member watches one (10 min).
- Selection: the committee forms four teams of 5 or 6 from its notes while everyone else plays 21 in small groups (4 min).
- 3v3 test games on two half courts, two 4-minute rounds with subs after each basket (8 min).
- Adjust: if any game ends with more than a 6-point gap, the committee proposes one single swap and explains why to the teacher, not the class (3 min).
- Teams are announced to everyone at once, followed by a short reflection on how the class felt (2 min).
Rules
- Nobody is ever picked publicly or by taking turns.
- Committee notes go to the teacher and are never shown.
- Teams stay together for the whole unit unless there's a good reason.
- Safety: in 1v1 and in games, no contact on shots and no charging.
Variations
Easier
The teacher provides nearly finished teams and the committee adjusts one or two names.
Standard
Committee with stations, selection, test games and adjustment.
Harder
The committee also designs a handicap system in case the imbalance continues.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: joins the committee or does the stations on a low hoop with adapted time.
- Shy students or autism: the committee keeps their go-to classmate on the same team.
- Advanced players: in test games may only score with their non-dominant hand.
Learning goals
- Make organizational decisions based on fairness.
- Observe and record skills objectively and discreetly.
- Value the importance of competing on equal terms.

Teacher tip
Review the final proposal yourself. This avoids the humiliation of being picked last, the classic mistake.
