Balanced Teams for the League: Tests and Draft
The school league organizing committee tests a system for forming even teams: a short skill test and a quick check game. If the goal difference is large, the teams are rebalanced using objective criteria.
How to play
- Mini-test at two stations: a timed futsal dribble through 6 cones and 10 passes against a bench or wall in 30 seconds (8 min).
- The committee adds up the scores and splits the class into four teams with a snake draft: 1-2-3-4-4-3-2-1 (4 min).
- Five-minute check games: A vs. B and C vs. D on two courts (6 min).
- If any game ends with more than a three-goal difference, the committee proposes a player swap justified with the data (3 min).
- Second round of 5-minute crossover games to validate the change (6 min).
- Conclusion: the committee writes the team-forming rule for the real league on the card (3 min).
Rules
- Test results are confidential: only the committee sees them.
- Every team must be mixed-gender.
- No slide tackles or body checks during games.
- If someone does not want to take the test, they are given an average score.
Variations
Easier
Use only one test and one round of games.
Standard
Two tests, a snake draft and two rounds of check games.
Harder
Add a third variable, each player's self-rating, and compare its usefulness with the test.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: joins the committee and the data analysis, or plays with a rule that requires passing to them.
- Low confidence in sports: results are never read aloud and nobody knows their draft order.
- Visual impairment: plays with a sound ball on a reserved court, and their team is balanced using their own rating.
Learning goals
- Use objective data to make fair organizational decisions.
- Test in practice whether a team-forming system works.
- Promote equality and respect in school competition.

Teacher tip
Talk beforehand about keeping data confidential; it is a good moment to address personal data privacy. Swap futsal for whatever sport your league uses.
