Balance Workshop for Older Adults: Fall Prevention
Groups design and test with each other a 10-minute balance workshop for a senior center, with safe progressions always close to a support chair. Before and after, a simple test, standing up, walking 3 m and sitting back down, is used to practice assessing participants.
How to play
- Demonstrate the timed up-and-go test: from sitting, walk 3 m to a cone, turn and sit back down; pairs practice timing each other (5 min).
- Four groups each prepare a station with three levels: feet together, tandem stance and single-leg stance, always with the chair in front; weight shifts, heel-to-toe walking along a wall or passing a foam ball while standing also work (7 min).
- Rotate through the four stations: one student leads, another plays the older adult and another spots by standing alongside (12 min).
- Repeat the initial test with one older adult from each group and discuss how to explain results tactfully (3 min).
- Each group adjusts its station on the card for the real day (3 min).
Rules
- A sturdy chair or a wall is always within reach.
- A safety partner stands alongside, not behind, ready to hold the waist.
- Move up a level only after holding the position 10 seconds without support.
- Practice in athletic shoes on a dry floor, never in socks alone.
Variations
Easier
Only two stations with a hand kept on the chair the whole time.
Standard
Four stations with three levels, a safety partner and the up-and-go test.
Harder
Add dual tasks at the top level, such as naming cities or counting backward while balancing.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: leads a seated trunk balance station, reaching for objects in different directions.
- Visual impairment: is given constant touch support, and each position is described before taking it.
- Ankle injury: acts as leader and safety partner.
Learning goals
- Design progressive, safe balance exercises for older adults.
- Apply a simple functional test and interpret the results.
- Understand why fall prevention matters for lifelong health.
Equipment for a class of 25

- cones: 8
- foam balls: 4
- stopwatch: 4
- cards: 8
Teacher tip
As a rough guide, more than 12 seconds on the up-and-go test is linked to higher fall risk, but students must not give diagnoses. Remember that real participants may have health conditions: the workshop must follow the senior center's guidance.
