Balance Dome Challenges with Partner Passing
Balance stations on a balance domes in groups of 4, combining holds, squats, and catching passes with a spotter alongside. Students work on dynamic balance, ankle proprioception, and safe spotting.
How to play
- Groups of 4 per balance domes, with mats around it. Roles: performer, spotter at the side, passer, and resting; rotate every 45 seconds (2 min).
- Level 1 (4 min): stand on the dome with both feet, find 10 seconds of stability, and do 5 easy squats.
- Level 2 (4 min): one leg for 10 seconds on each side; then 5 chest passes with the passer 6 ft away.
- Level 3 (4 min): passes to the left and right that force a weight shift; students who handle it catch on one leg.
- Group challenge (3 min): how many passes in a row can each student catch without stepping off? Add up the group total.
- Wrap-up: calf stretch and a quick talk about eyes and arms (1 min).
Rules
- A spotter always stands alongside with hands ready but not holding on.
- Step on and off from the side, never jumping onto the dome.
- Use the balance dome only with the dome side up.
- Step down as soon as you lose control.
Variations
Easier
Feet on the dome with one hand on the spotter's shoulder.
Standard
Levels 1 to 3 with a spotter and passes.
Harder
One-leg catches with eyes closed between passes.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: seated balance on the balance dome or a stability ball while catching passes.
- Visual impairment: the passer calls out before each pass and uses a beeper ball.
- Lower balance: start on a folded mat before moving to the balance dome.
Learning goals
- Keep your balance on an unstable surface.
- Adjust your posture while catching a ball.
- Spot a partner correctly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- balance domes: 6
- soft balls: 6
- mats: 12
Teacher tip
If you only have 2 or 3 balance domes, set up parallel stations with folded mats. Make sure spotters are really paying attention and not watching another group.
