Balance Disc Partner Catch
In pairs, each student stands on an inflatable balance disc and the two pass a foam ball back and forth using different passes without stepping off. The activity builds balance on an unstable surface, core stability and hand-eye coordination.
How to play
- Give each student a disc and each pair a ball; place discs 2 m (6 ft) apart on a non-slip floor, away from walls (2 min).
- Get used to it: step on with both feet and knees slightly bent and hold for 20 seconds, then try one foot (2 min).
- Two-hand chest passes: go for 10 passes in a row without anyone stepping off; if someone steps off, the count restarts (3 min).
- Mixed passes: bounce pass, overhead pass and passes to the side so the partner has to reach without losing the disc (3 min).
- Partner challenge: count how many passes you can make in one minute without stepping off; take three tries to beat your score (4 min).
- Finish: pass while standing on one foot on the disc, switching feet every five passes (2 min).
Rules
- If you lose your balance, step down to the floor; never jump off the disc.
- Pass to your partner's chest, and keep it soft.
- Use the discs only on a non-slip floor and in athletic shoes.
- Don't throw until your partner is steady and ready.
Variations
Easier
Pass with one foot on the disc and one on the floor, or stand on a folded mat instead.
Standard
Use a variety of passes with both feet on the disc.
Harder
Pass two balls at once, or stay on one foot for the whole challenge.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: sit on the disc, in a chair or on the floor, and make the same passes while working on trunk balance.
- Visual impairment: use a large brightly colored ball, with bounce or rolling passes announced out loud.
- Low skill level: a partner offers a hand to step on, and passing distance drops to 1 m (3 ft).
Learning goals
- Maintain balance on an unstable surface.
- Coordinate throwing and catching without losing posture.
- Improve a cooperative score with a partner.
Equipment for a class of 25
- balance discs: 25
- foam balls: 13
Teacher tip
Check how much air is in the discs: the firmer they are, the less stable. If you don't have one per student, use trios where one student waits and counts passes.
