Badminton Tag-Out Rotation Line
Two teams of four or five line up on each side of the net: after hitting the shuttle, a player peels off to the right and runs to the back of the line so the next teammate steps in. Students work on quick movement, getting into position, and team play with no elimination.
How to play
- Set up 3 badminton courts with nets about 5 ft high; on each, two teams of 4 or 5 line up behind a cone at the center of the back of each side (3 min).
- Cooperative round: the first player in one line serves underhand, hits, and runs out to the right to the back of the line; the first player on the other side returns and does the same (4 min).
- Both teams on a court count together how many hits in a row they get without the shuttle dropping (court record).
- Competitive round: when the shuttle drops or goes out, the other team scores 1 point and the next player in the line that missed serves again (6 min).
- Games go to 11 points; then each team changes courts and opponents (3 min).
Rules
- Each player hits once and exits to the right.
- The next player waits behind the cone and steps in only after the teammate has hit.
- Safety: always exit on the same side to avoid collisions, and no one goes under the net.
- Serve underhand from behind the cone.
Variations
Easier
Play with a balloon or a large, slow shuttle and lower the net.
Standard
One hit per player, exit right, and games to 11 points.
Harder
Besides returning to the line, players must touch a side cone before getting back in.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student stays in a fixed spot near the net instead of rotating and joins the play every other team hit.
- Shyness: play only the cooperative round first until the student feels comfortable in the group.
- Lower fitness: may walk back to the line, and the team waits until they're ready to serve.
Learning goals
- Move quickly to hit and clear the space.
- Get behind the shuttle before hitting it.
- Take part in a team game with no elimination.
Equipment for a class of 25
- rackets: 25
- shuttlecocks: 12
- nets: 3
- cones: 6
Teacher tip
If lines are too long, the game loses intensity: keep it to five per line. Shuttles fly best indoors, out of the wind.
