Badminton Shuttle Throw to Overhead Clear
A technique progression that starts with throwing the shuttle overhand by hand to build the movement of the clear. Students work on a side-on stance, a high elbow, and full arm extension to send the shuttle high and deep.
How to play
- Partners face each other 6–8 m (20–25 ft) apart with no rackets: each throws the shuttle overhand, copying the hitting motion (2 min).
- Side-on stance, opposite foot forward, free arm pointing at the shuttle, elbow high: ten throws that sail over the partner's head (3 min).
- With rackets and a handshake grip: one partner tosses the shuttle high from 3 m (10 ft) and the other hits it deep; 10 hits, then switch (4 min).
- At 10–12 m (35–40 ft), rally clear to clear cooperatively, counting consecutive hits without a drop (3 min).
- Challenge: a line of cones 1 m (3 ft) from the back line; every clear landing past it scores a point. Two 90-second rounds; record the best score (3 min).
Rules
- Before swinging, check that nobody is within 2 m (6 ft).
- All pairs hit in the same direction.
- Shuttles are picked up on the whistle, never while others are hitting.
Variations
Easier
Work at 6 m (20 ft) with plastic shuttles, which fly more slowly.
Standard
Cooperative clear rally at 10–12 m with the cone line as the target.
Harder
Before each clear, move back with crossover steps and recover to the middle after the shot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: hit from a seated position, with the tosser 2 m (6 ft) away and a closer target line.
- Visual impairment: use a high-contrast shuttle and a "Now!" cue before each toss.
- Fitness level: each pair picks its distance and moves back after five clears in a row.
Learning goals
- Perform the clear with a side-on stance and a high elbow.
- Send the shuttle with height and depth.
- Give a partner useful tosses.
Equipment for a class of 25
- rackets: 26
- shuttlecocks: 30
- cones: 20
Teacher tip
The usual mistake is hitting square to the net with a low elbow, pushing the shuttle; cue "wind up like a quarterback throwing deep." Set pairs in parallel rows so you can see everyone.
