Badminton Doubles Winners and Unforced Errors Stat Sheet
While one pair plays doubles, another pair watches and records every winner, every unforced error, and its court zone. With that data the pair adjusts its tactics in a second game, building students' ability to analyze their own play.
How to play
- Spend 3 minutes on the stat sheet: the court split into 6 zones, with tally marks for winners (W) and unforced errors (E) for each player.
- Groups of 6 per court: two pairs play and one observes, each observer tracking one specific player.
- Play a 6-minute first game; observers record every point-ending shot and its zone.
- Take a 3-minute break: observers share two key stats and the pair agrees on one specific adjustment.
- Play a second 6-minute game using the adjustment while observers track again; then rotate roles.
Rules
- If it's unclear whether an error was forced, don't record it.
- Report data in descriptive language, never personal judgments.
- For safety, observers stand 6 feet behind the baseline.
Variations
Easier
Record only unforced errors, with no zones.
Standard
Winners and errors by player and by zone.
Harder
Add the shot type and calculate each player's efficiency percentage.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: acts as lead observer and plays half court on their turn.
- Students with autism: get a sheet with a filled-in example and always observe the same player.
- Lower skill level: the first shot of each rally may be thrown by hand.
Learning goals
- Record objective performance data in doubles.
- Interpret the data to propose a tactical adjustment.
- Give and receive feedback respectfully.

Teacher tip
Use clipboards so the sheets don't blow away. The break is the key: if the data doesn't become one concrete decision, the activity loses its point, so circulate and help.
