Badminton Doubles Net Interception Game
Doubles in attacking formation where any point the net player wins on an interception counts double. Students learn front-and-back positioning, how to close the net after a smash or drop, and how to anticipate the opponent's reply.
How to play
- Mark the short service line with cones: the net player must stay in front of it while the partner attacks from the back.
- Two pairs per court. Run a 5-minute technical round: the back player smashes or drops and the net player only cuts off flat returns.
- Play 7-minute rally-scoring games: if the net player wins the point by intercepting before the cone line, the pair scores 2.
- If the pair has to lift the shuttle, they switch to side-by-side defense and call out "Sides!"
- After each game, pairs rotate to new opponents and switch who plays the net; play two games.
Rules
- The net player keeps the racket in front of the body at face height.
- Touching the net with the racket or body is a point for the opponents.
- For safety, the back player does not smash if the partner is in line with the shot.
Variations
Easier
Opponents may only return with high shots, giving the net player time to get set.
Standard
7-minute games with double-point interceptions and a formation switch on every lift.
Harder
An interception is worth 3, but a net-player error costs a point.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: always plays the net in a narrower zone marked with cones.
- Shy students or students with autism: steady partner and a fixed key word to communicate.
- Lower fitness: 5-minute games with 1 minute of active rest.
Learning goals
- Take up front-and-back attacking positions in doubles.
- Anticipate flat returns and intercept them at the net.
- Switch formations based on shuttle height.
Equipment for a class of 25
- rackets: 25
- shuttlecocks: 12
- nets: 6
- cones: 24
Teacher tip
Many net players drift back into no-man's land; their spot is near the short service line. Watch that nobody swings with a partner in the path of the shot.
