Badminton Doubles: Flat Drive to Escape Defense
A doubles scenario in which the defending pair turns a mid-height shuttle into a fast, flat drive to win back the initiative. Students practice the short grip, a compact stroke in front of the body and reading the shuttle's height.
How to play
- Review the short grip with the racket in front of the chest and demonstrate the forehand and backhand drive (3 min).
- In pairs on half a court, drive against drive at tape height in 3 sets of 1 minute, switching sides (4 min).
- 2 vs 2: pair A attacks with soft mid-height smashes and pair B must return with a flat drive; swap roles every 5 shuttles (6 min).
- Free 2 vs 2 rallies where a winning drive counts double; each pair records how often they went from defense to attack with a drive (5 min).
- Wrap-up: at what shuttle height did the drive work, and when was a lift better (2 min).
Rules
- Keep the racket in front of the body; never swing above the partner's head.
- In doubles each player covers their own side to avoid racket clashes.
- During the guided phase, attacking smashes are at 50% power.
- If the shuttle comes at the body, protect the face with the racket and stop play.
Variations
Easier
Cooperative drive rally with no scoring, aiming for 10 hits in a row.
Standard
Flat-drive defense against mid-height smashes, with bonus points.
Harder
Attackers smash at full speed and defenders may only drive or block.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play the front half and opponents send the shuttle within reach.
- Partial visual impairment: shuttles that contrast with the background and slower pace.
- Wrist injury: forehand drive only and shorter sets.
Learning goals
- Perform the flat drive with a short grip and a compact stroke.
- Recognize the shuttle height that allows a counterattack.
- Turn a defensive situation into an attacking one in doubles.
Equipment for a class of 25
- badminton rackets: 28
- shuttlecocks: 28
- badminton nets: 7
Teacher tip
The typical mistake is a swing that is too big; ask that the racket never go behind the shoulder. Pair students of similar level so the pace is realistic.
