Badminton Darts: Hit Exactly 21
In pairs, each player hits clears and drops at numbered zones on the opposite court, adding points to reach exactly 21, like a darts game. Students work on accuracy with different shots and the tactical math of which zone to target.
How to play
- Divide each half court with cones into four numbered zones using cards: net 1 point, middle 3, back right 5, and back left 5; place pairs of similar level on each side (3 min).
- One partner is the feeder and serves high to the other, who returns with a clear or a drop to the zone of their choice.
- The zone where the shuttle lands adds its value; going over 21 sends the player back to their previous score, just like in darts.
- Each player hits 3 shuttles per turn, then partners switch roles; the total is called out loud (9 min).
- The first to reach exactly 21 wins; the next game is played against a pair from the neighboring court.
- Wrap-up: discuss which zones were easiest to hit and why (2 min).
Rules
- A shuttle that lands outside the zones scores nothing.
- Players must call their target zone before hitting; if it lands in another zone, it is worth half, rounded down.
- The feeder always serves from the same spot.
- Safety: wait until your partner is ready before serving.
Variations
Easier
Play to 15 and allow hitting a hand-tossed shuttle.
Standard
Play to exactly 21 with 3 shots per turn and a called zone.
Harder
The final point must be scored with a specific shot, such as a drop to the net.
Adaptations
- For students with limited mobility, the feeder sends the shuttle within reach and the zones move closer to the net.
- For students with attention difficulties, keep the score on a whiteboard next to the court.
- For stronger students, the feeder hits with a racket instead of serving.
Learning goals
- Direct clears and drops to specific areas of the court.
- Work out which zone to target based on the score.
- Keep score honestly and out loud.
Equipment for a class of 25
- rackets: 26
- shuttlecocks: 30
- cones: 24
- cards: 24
Teacher tip
The mental math really hooks students at this age; use it to get them thinking tactically before they hit. Weigh the cards down with a cone so they do not blow away.
