Badminton: Cooperative Clear, Drop and Lift Chain
A closed pairs routine in which the shuttle always follows the same sequence: clear, clear, drop and lift. The cooperative challenge is to string together as many cycles as possible without a mistake and lock in technique at game pace.
How to play
- Explain the sequence: A clears, B clears back, A drops and B lifts to the back to restart (2 min).
- Timed 2-minute sets; the pair counts full cycles and records its best (6 min).
- Swap roles: now B starts and plays the drop (4 min).
- Advanced sequence: the lift is answered with a controlled smash at 60% and the partner blocks to the net to restart the cycle (6 min).
- Each pair shares its record and the shot that breaks the chain most often (2 min).
Rules
- In the advanced sequence, smashes are at 60% and never aimed at the face.
- If the shuttle drops, the chain restarts with no penalty.
- Each pair stays on its own court; stray shuttles are collected at the end of the set.
- The player not hitting returns to base position, not off the court.
Variations
Easier
A short clear-and-lift sequence, no drop.
Standard
Clear-clear-drop-lift cycle with timed sets.
Harder
Add the smash and block and require every shot to land in marked zones.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: the partner adjusts distances so shots land within reach.
- Hearing impairment: the start and end of each set are signaled by hand.
- Low fitness level: 1-minute sets with 1 minute of rest.
Learning goals
- Link basic strokes with accuracy and continuity.
- Cooperate with the partner to keep the cycle going.
- Identify one's own least consistent shot.

Teacher tip
Clubs use this routine in their warm-ups; you can keep it as a weekly challenge with the group record posted on the board. Correct the return to center after every shot.
