Badminton Clear and Drop Rally
In pairs, students alternate high deep shots (clears) and soft shots that fall close to the net (drop shots), first in a set pattern and then by choice. The activity builds contrast in power and flight path and the intent to move the opponent around.
How to play
- Place each pair on half a badminton court with the net at 5 ft or a rope; if courts are short, mark half courts with cones under one shared low net.
- For 4 minutes, rally clears: both players hit high and deep with the arm fully extended overhead, aiming to land past the line of cones at the back.
- For 4 minutes, rally drop shots: both move up to the net and tap the shuttle gently so it lands within 6 ft of the net.
- For 6 minutes, fixed pattern: player A always clears and player B always drops; switch roles after 3 minutes.
- For 6 minutes, play points: start with an underhand serve and win the rally by landing the shuttle on the other side; a point won with a drop shot counts double.
- Finish with 2 minutes: each pair discusses which shot won them the most points.
Rules
- Before swinging, check that nobody from the next court is in your swing space.
- Always hit the shuttle over the net; don't touch the net with your racket.
- If a shuttle lands on another court, wait until that rally ends to get it.
Variations
Easier
Use a slower shuttle or a balloon and shorten the court to 13 ft per side.
Standard
Fixed clear-drop pattern, then free play with drop-shot points counting double.
Harder
The player who clears must return to the middle of the court and touch a cone before the next shot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays from the middle of their court and the partner sends the shuttle within reach.
- Hearing impairment: agree on hand signals for the role switch and the start of point play.
- Lower skill level: allow students to catch the shuttle with the non-racket hand and hit it from there.
Learning goals
- Tell the difference between clear and drop shot technique.
- Adjust hitting power to reach the target depth.
- Use a mix of shots to move the opponent.
Equipment for a class of 25
- rackets: 26
- shuttlecocks: 26
- net: 4
- cones: 24
Teacher tip
Many students hit the clear with a low elbow; cue them to 'scratch your back' with the racket before swinging. Keep equipment in a bin at each court so cleanup is quick.
