Badminton Americano Doubles Tournament
Mini doubles tournament played Americano style: partners change every round and each player keeps their own total of the points won with that round's partner. Students work on adapting to different partners, sportsmanship, and self-officiating.
How to play
- Split the class into groups of 4 per court (with 25 students, one group of 5 in which one player sits out each round and keeps score) and post the partner chart for each round on the whiteboard (3 min).
- Round 1: A and B vs. C and D in a 6-min timed game with rally scoring; at the whistle, each player's points are recorded.
- Round 2: A and C vs. B and D, another 6 min.
- Round 3: A and D vs. B and C, another 6 min; this way everyone plays once with each partner in the group.
- Standings: each player adds up the points from their three games; the top scorer on each court moves up a court for a 5-min final round.
- Wrap-up: congratulate the winners and have each student share which partner helped them play their best and why (2 min).
Rules
- Each game ends at the whistle even mid-rally; that last point does not count.
- Players call the score out loud and report it to the teacher at the end.
- The team closest to the shuttle makes the in or out call.
- Safety: in doubles, the front player does not turn around when their partner is about to smash.
Variations
Easier
4-min games, serving from midcourt with no smashes.
Standard
Three 6-min rounds with changing partners and individual standings.
Harder
Use doubles service rules, and the winner of each court plays the winners of other courts.
Adaptations
- For students with limited mobility, that round's partner covers the back court.
- For shy students, the whiteboard chart lets them know ahead of time who they will play with.
- To balance levels, set up each court with players of similar ability.
Learning goals
- Adapt your game to partners with different styles and levels.
- Show good sportsmanship whether winning or losing.
- Officiate your own games honestly.

The Americano format avoids lopsided fixed pairs and keeps anyone from always losing. Have the chart ready in advance so no time is wasted organizing.
