Bachata by Ear: the Tap and the Breaks in the Music
Students listen to and break down the structure of bachata (requinto guitar, bongo, güira and bass) so they can dance the basic with intention: hitting the tap on 4 and 8, freezing on the breaks and changing energy when the song's mambo section kicks in. They dance solo first, then with a partner in whichever role they choose.
How to play
- Guided listening to a bachata: the group raises a hand whenever the güira comes in and claps on 4 and 8 (4 min).
- Solo side basic, marking the tap with the hip or knee, never with a hop (4 min).
- In groups of four, students fill out a worksheet with the seconds in the song where there are breaks or instrument changes (4 min).
- Dance the whole song, freezing on every break, solo or with a partner in an open hold (5 min).
- Each group compares its worksheet with what it danced and discusses which moments were easiest to feel (3 min).
Rules
- Partners dance in an open hand hold, one arm's length apart.
- Each student chooses whether to dance solo or with a partner, and with whom.
- The tap is marked gently to protect knees and ankles.
- Everyone listens quietly while the analysis track is playing.
Variations
Easier
Mark only the tap on 4 and 8 with claps, with no traveling.
Standard
Basic with tap and freezes on the breaks, solo or with a partner.
Harder
Switch from the side basic to the box step whenever the guitar mambo comes in.
Adaptations
- Hearing impairment: rests a hand on the speaker placed on the floor to feel the vibration, and a classmate signals 4 and 8 by hand.
- Limited mobility: marks the rhythm with shoulders and arms from the wheelchair and takes full part in the worksheet analysis.
- Autism or noise sensitivity: gets the worksheet with the timings already marked and stands away from the speaker.
Learning goals
- Identify the instruments and rhythmic structure of bachata.
- Match movement to the accents and breaks in the music.
- Appreciate bachata as a cultural expression of the Dominican Republic.
Equipment for a class of 25
- speaker: 1
- worksheets: 7
Teacher tip
Pick a traditional bachata with very clear breaks. The worksheet doubles as assessment evidence for the music analysis.
