Åstrand Cycle Test with Rotating Stations
In shifts, some students pedal for 6 minutes at a fixed workload to estimate VO2 max with the submaximal Åstrand test, while the rest rotate through light-activity stations. Students learn to run a simple, safe lab-style test.
How to play
- Line up the bikes with a helper partner at each one. Everyone else forms groups for two stations: easy jog between cones and mobility with data entry (3 min).
- Setup: seat height at the hip, heart rate monitor on, and a moderate workload set by the teacher based on body weight and fitness level (2 min).
- Shift 1: 6 minutes at 60 rpm. The helper records heart rate at the end of minutes 5 and 6; it should be between 120 and 170 bpm, with less than 5 beats of difference (6 min).
- Afterward, 1 minute of easy pedaling, then rotate: riders go to the stations and the next group gets on (1 min).
- Repeat shifts until everyone possible has been tested (about 14 more minutes).
- Using the Åstrand chart, each student estimates their result and writes it next to their running test score to compare (4 min).
Rules
- The rider speaks up about any dizziness; the helper stops the test and stays with them.
- If heart rate goes above 170, lower the workload and retest another day.
- Keep station work easy so it doesn't affect the next shift.
Variations
Easier
4-minute test at a low workload, used as practice collecting data.
Standard
6-minute test at a fixed workload with a helper and an estimation chart.
Harder
Students choose the best workload based on heart rate in the first 2 minutes and adjust it like a technician would.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: if pedaling isn't possible, the student acts as the technician who sets the workload and records data.
- Autism: a step-by-step script taped to the handlebars and the same helper throughout.
- Low fitness level: assign the lowest workload and focus on self-comparison.
Learning goals
- Apply a submaximal cycle assessment protocol.
- Record heart rate and check that it has leveled off.
- Compare results from different aerobic tests.
Equipment for a class of 25
- stationary bikes: 6
- heart rate monitors: 6
- stopwatch: 6
- cones: 8
- worksheets: 25
Teacher tip
With 6 bikes, 24 students can be tested in 4 shifts; with fewer, split the class over two days. Have a simplified printed estimation chart ready.
