Around the World Table Tennis
Groups of 6 to 8 students circle a ping-pong table: each one hits once and runs to the other end to hit again later. Students build reaction speed, soft-shot control, and focus in a fast-paced game with no long sit-outs.
How to play
- Set up four tables at least 6 ft apart and put 6 or 7 students at each; each group splits into two lines, one at each end.
- The first player in one line serves softly; the first player at the other end returns it, keeps the paddle face open, and runs along the right side of the table to the back of the opposite line.
- For 5 minutes, cooperative play: the group counts consecutive hits and sets a record.
- For 8 minutes, wild card play: a player who misses is not out but walks one extra lap around their line and jumps back in; the last two players without a miss each round earn a point.
- When three or fewer players are left without a miss, switch to a speed round where the hitter spins around once before getting back in line.
- Finish with 2 minutes: each group shares its record and balls go back into a bucket at each table.
Rules
- Always run in the same direction around the table.
- Soft shots only: no smashing in this game.
- Students waiting in line don't lean on or touch the table.
Variations
Easier
Allow two bounces on your own side and use a larger paddle.
Standard
One bounce per side, soft hit, and a run to the other end.
Harder
Students must alternate forehand and backhand, and the last round is played with the non-dominant hand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student stays at one end while classmates rotate; a wheelchair user plays from the side of the table without legs.
- Hearing impairment: signal the start and end of each round by raising a cone.
- Lower skill level: use slower foam balls at one of the tables.
Learning goals
- React quickly to hit the ball after moving.
- Control power to keep the ball on the table.
- Take turns and follow the group's rules.

Teacher tip
This classic recess game is hugely motivating, and the extra-lap rule means nobody sits out. Make sure the running paths around neighboring tables don't overlap.
