Ankle Roll Ball Tag
A ball tag game where taggers never use their hands: they must roll a foam ball along the ground to hit a runner's feet, and that runner then picks up the ball and becomes a tagger. Students practice accurate underhand rolling, dodging, and jumping.
How to play
- Set up a 20 x 20 m rectangle with cones. Give a foam ball to 3 taggers; everyone else spreads out (1 min).
- On the whistle, taggers move with the ball in their hands and roll it along the ground to hit a runner's feet or legs below the knee.
- Runners dodge by running or jumping over the ball. If the ball touches them below the knee, they pick it up and become a tagger.
- If a tagger misses, they chase down their own ball; no one else may touch it or kick it away.
- Each runner counts how many times they became a tagger during the round: the goal is the lowest number.
- Play 4 rounds of 3 minutes with 30-second breaks; add one more ball each round.
Rules
- The ball must always be rolled on the ground; if it bounces or flies, the tag doesn't count.
- Only hits below the knee count.
- Roll from at least 2 m away from the runner.
- Runners jump the ball with both feet and watch where they land.
Variations
Easier
Use big, slow balls and count any hit on the legs.
Standard
Three foam balls, hits below the knee, and rolls from 2 m.
Harder
Taggers may only roll with their non-dominant hand and from 4 m away.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student is a stationary tagger in one zone rolling with both hands, or gets a safe dodging lane.
- Visual impairment: use a ball with a bell, and the runner plays with a guide who calls out where the ball is coming from.
- Fitness level: students who tire can rest for 30 seconds in a hoop outside the rectangle.
Learning goals
- Roll a ball accurately toward a moving target.
- Dodge and jump an object coming along the ground.
- Follow the rolling-only rule for safety.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 6
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
Show how to roll with the opposite foot forward and the hand sweeping the floor. If someone throws the ball in the air, they lose it to another classmate.
