Animal Movement Strength Session
Students travel short distances using four-limb movements inspired by animals: bear, crab, frog, inchworm, and lizard. It builds shoulder, core, and leg strength along with mobility and body control, without equipment or external weights.
How to play
- Mark 5 lanes of 10 m (about 30 feet) with cones and place a mat at the end of each one. Make 5 groups of 5, one per lane (2 min).
- Teach the five movements: bear crawl (hands and feet, knees off the floor), crab walk (face up with hips high), frog jumps (from a deep squat), inchworm (walk hands out to a plank and walk feet in), and lizard crawl (low plank moving forward) (4 min).
- Round 1: each line goes down the lane in a bear crawl and walks back; the next student starts when the one ahead is halfway. Two passes per animal, switching animals every 90 seconds (8 min).
- 1-minute break on the mats with wrist mobility.
- Round 2: each group creates a combo of three animals in one trip down the lane (for example, bear, crab, and frog) and repeats it three times (3 min).
- Wrap-up: each group shows its combo to the class and discusses which muscles they felt most (2 min).
Rules
- Warm up wrists and shoulders before starting.
- Look forward or down, never sideways, to avoid collisions.
- Stay at least 6 feet behind the student ahead of you.
- If your wrists hurt, go onto your fists or switch to a standing movement.
Variations
Easier
6 m lanes with only bear, crab, and frog.
Standard
10 m lanes with all five animals and group combos.
Harder
Move backward or sideways and link all five animals in a row.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: adapt the animals into seated arm movements, such as floor pushes or pulling along a mat.
- Autism: cards with a drawing of each animal and the sequence order always visible.
- Lower fitness level: cover half the lane and walk the rest.
Learning goals
- Strengthen shoulder, core, and leg muscles with four-limb movements.
- Improve body control in unfamiliar positions.
- Create movement sequences as a group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 10
- mats: 5
Teacher tip
It may look like an elementary game, but middle schoolers buy in when you present it as functional training. The classic bear crawl mistake is hips too high: ask for a back flat as a table.
