Angel and Devil Color Chase
A traditional chase game: the "mother" secretly gives each child a color; the angel or the devil knocks, asks for a color, and chases whoever has it until they get back home. Students work on attention, reacting to a call, and speed with a turn.
How to play
- Three groups of 8, each in its own lane: a mother, an angel, a devil, and the rest on a home line. Place a turning cone 30 ft away (2 min).
- The mother whispers a color to each player. The angel arrives saying "knock, knock" and, when asked "who's there?", answers "the angel, looking for a color" and names one (1 min).
- The player with that color rounds the cone and runs home while the angel chases. If tagged, they line up behind the angel; if safe, they get a new color (5 min).
- Then the devil calls the same way and the two take turns. Whoever collects more players wins (3 min).
- Rotate mother, angel, and devil every 3 minutes; everyone returns home with a new color (5 min).
Rules
- Only the player with the called color runs; anyone else just returns home, no penalty.
- Runners must go around the outside of the cone.
- Safety: keep lanes at least 12 ft apart to prevent collisions.
Variations
Easier
The chaser starts 10 ft farther back.
Standard
Out-and-back chase around the cone with a simultaneous start.
Harder
Two-word colors ("light red," "dark green") that must be called exactly.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student is the mother or has a turning cone at 15 ft.
- Hearing impairment: each color is also shown on a colored card.
- High fitness: the student zigzags around two cones.
Learning goals
- Stay focused and respond only to your own call.
- Accelerate, round a cone, and return without losing speed.
- Take on the roles of a traditional game while respecting its rules.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 9
Teacher tip
Play the mother yourself in the first round to model the dialogue. If a color never gets called, the mother swaps it so everyone runs.
