Ancient Greek Pentathlon Stations
Students relive the five events of the ancient Olympic pentathlon (sprint, jump, discus, javelin and wrestling) in safe, modified versions. They practice basic track and field skills and learn where sport began.
How to play
- Spend 2 minutes on the ancient pentathlon and make 5 groups of 5, each a Greek city: Athens, Sparta, Corinth, Thebes and Argos.
- Set up five stations: 30 m sprint, standing broad jump, soft flying disc, foam javelin and palm-push wrestling.
- In the sprint, jump, discus and javelin, each student gets two tries and records the best mark on the city card.
- In palm-push wrestling, partners face each other, feet together, and push palms only; the first to move a foot loses.
- Each station lasts 5 minutes, and groups rotate on the whistle (25 min).
- Wrap-up (3 min): 1 point for each mark over the minimum; cities that beat their first round earn an olive wreath.
Rules
- Discs and javelins are thrown and retrieved all at once on the signal.
- Nobody enters the throwing area holding equipment.
- In wrestling, push palms only, no grabbing.
- Accept the mark the judge records.
Variations
Easier
A 20 m sprint and closer scoring zones for throws.
Standard
Five 5-minute stations with two attempts each.
Harder
Standing triple jump and throws with a three-step approach.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: throws seated, replaces the sprint with a wheelchair course and scores improvement.
- Hearing impairment: a raised cone signals throw and retrieve; use pictures of Greek vases.
- Lower fitness: choose between two minimum marks.
Learning goals
- Practice running, jumping and throwing.
- Learn about the origins of the Olympics.
- Follow safety rules when throwing.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soft flying discs: 5
- foam javelins: 5
- cones: 20
- tape measures: 2
- score cards: 5
Teacher tip
Stay near the discus and javelin and enforce throw-together, retrieve-together. A picture of a Greek vase with athletes really hooks this age group.
