Ambidextrous Paddleball: Double Points Off-Hand
A 1-on-1 paddleball game over a low rope where players may switch the paddle to the other hand at any time, and every point won with the non-dominant hand counts double. Students build two-sided coordination, adjust their strokes, and practice good sportsmanship.
How to play
- Stretch long ropes 3 feet high between cones or posts and use cones to mark courts 13 by 26 feet on each side; set up two pairs per rope.
- Warm up for 4 minutes with a cooperative rally, switching the paddle to the other hand every 5 hits without stopping the rally.
- Explain the rules in 2 minutes: play one bounce per side; a point won with a non-dominant-hand hit is worth 2.
- Players may switch hands whenever they want, but they must call 'switch' before hitting so the opponent knows they're using the off hand.
- Play 4-minute games and rotate opponents clockwise on the whistle, for three games total.
- Finish with 2 minutes of reflection: which stroke is hardest with the other hand, and what helps improve it?
Rules
- You can't call 'switch' unless you actually changed hands.
- Only hit the ball when it's on your side; never reach over the rope.
- Keep your free hand away from the opponent's paddle and the rope.
Variations
Easier
Allow two bounces and make off-hand points worth triple.
Standard
Play one bounce, free hand switching, and double points for off-hand winners.
Harder
Every serve must be made with the non-dominant hand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play seated on a court shortened to 10 feet deep with two bounces.
- Shyness: place the student on an end rope and let them play the first round cooperatively.
- Fitness or skill level: the most skilled players use only their non-dominant hand for the whole game.
Learning goals
- Improve coordination on both sides of the body.
- Adapt stroke technique when using the weaker hand.
- Play honestly and respectfully when keeping score.
Equipment for a class of 25
- paddleball paddles: 26
- soft balls: 13
- long rope: 6
- cones: 24
Teacher tip
This works well for leveling uneven matchups, because the stronger player has a reason to take risks with the off hand. Make sure the hand switch is quick and that players don't turn toward their opponent while switching.
