Alternative Sports Round-Robin
A station-based tournament where teams rotate through four alternative sports they've already learned (kin-ball, tchoukball, floorball, and ultimate or colpbol) in short games refereed by the students themselves. It builds independence, comparing sports, and fair play.
How to play
- Set up 4 fields, one per sport, each with a rules card; form 8 teams of 3-4 in pinnies, two per field.
- Explain how it works (3 min): each game lasts 5 minutes, one of the playing teams names a fair-play referee, and the score is written on the field's card.
- Rounds 1 to 4 (5 min each): play on the whistle; on the next whistle, each team moves clockwise to the next field.
- During each switch (1 min), teams read the card and get set.
- Besides the score, each team gives its opponent a fair-play rating from 1 to 3, which counts in the final standings.
- Wrap-up (3 min): read the standings, and each team shares which sport felt most cooperative and which most strategic.
Rules
- Follow the sport-specific rules on each card.
- The fair-play referee makes the calls, and everyone accepts them without arguing.
- Safety fouls (high stick, contact) give a point to the other team.
- Safety: no one cuts across another field when rotating; walk around the outside.
Variations
Easier
Use three stations instead of four with 6-minute games.
Standard
Four alternative sports with 5-minute games and a fair-play rating.
Harder
Each team must propose and apply a new rule in one of the sports.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: each station uses the adaptation already practiced in class.
- Autism: give the student the station order in writing and a visual warning one minute before each switch.
- Lower fitness: teams of 4 allow subs and rest within each game.
Learning goals
- Compare the features of different alternative sports.
- Run games, rules, and officiating independently.
- Value fair play as part of the result.

Teacher tip
This only works if students have already learned the sports; it's not an intro lesson. Laminated cards with diagrams save explanations and arguments.
