Alphabet Hopscotch Spelling Grid
On a chalk alphabet grid, each group spells words by jumping from letter to letter through touching boxes, with a one-foot hop on each letter of the word. It builds jumping in different directions, spatial awareness, and focus.
How to play
- Draw six chalk grids of 5 × 6 boxes, 16 inches each, with the 26 letters plus four free boxes, vowels spread out. Prepare cards with 3- to 6-letter words. Make six groups of 4 (3 min).
- Enter from the bottom row and move with two-foot jumps through touching boxes (forward, back, sideways, or diagonal) without touching lines. On each letter of the word, do a one-foot hop and say the letter out loud (2 min).
- Round 1: each student draws a card and jumps the word while the group checks. One point per correct letter without touching a line (5 min).
- Round 2, secret word: someone jumps a word without saying the letters and the others guess; whoever guesses goes next (4 min).
- Round 3: the group spells a long word as a relay, one letter per student, as fast as possible. Each group shares its longest word (4 min).
Rules
- Jump only to touching boxes, never over several letters.
- Free boxes are for resting on both feet, 3 seconds at most.
- Only one student on the grid; the rest wait along one side.
Variations
Easier
Use 3-letter words and allow walking between letters, jumping only on each letter.
Standard
Spell 3- to 6-letter words with two-foot jumps and a hop on each letter.
Harder
Spell words of up to 8 letters hopping the whole way, switching feet on every vowel.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: point to letters with a pole from outside the grid while a partner jumps the chosen route.
- Dyslexia: use cards with the word in large print and a picture of the object.
- Fitness level: strong movers spell the word backward; students who tire mix jumps and steps.
Learning goals
- Link jumps in different directions with balance and accuracy.
- Find their way around a grid to plan the shortest route.
- Connect movement with spelling.
Equipment for a class of 25
- chalk: 6
- cards: 40
Teacher tip
Grids take time: draw them before class or ask older students to help at recess. On diagonal jumps, have students look at the target box so they land under control.
