Alexander Technique Constructive Rest
Students lie semi-supine with knees bent and their head resting on a short stack of books, letting the back settle into the floor. It works spinal unloading, postural awareness, and relaxation after exercise.
How to play
- Each student sets out a yoga mat with 2–3 books at the head end; the teacher demonstrates the position (1 min).
- Lie face up, head on the books, knees pointing at the ceiling, feet flat about hip-width apart (1 min).
- Adjust the height: the chin shouldn't tip back or press into the chest; add or remove a book.
- Hands on the belly, calm nose breathing for 4 min; every 30 seconds the teacher gives a slow cue: "let your neck release," "let your back lengthen."
- Roll to one side, wait 20 seconds, and push up slowly with the hands (2 min).
Rules
- Stay silent during the rest phase.
- Always roll to the side before sitting up to avoid dizziness.
- If the lower back is uncomfortable, walk the feet closer to the hips or tell the teacher.
Variations
Easier
Hold the position for just 2 minutes with soft music and no cues.
Standard
Hold the position for 4 minutes while following the teacher's cues.
Harder
Afterward, write one sentence about which part of the back felt more grounded than at the start.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do it on a mat table or in a reclined wheelchair with a cushion under the head.
- Autism or shyness: set up in a corner and keep the eyes open, focused on a spot on the ceiling.
- Back pain: place a rolled-up mat under the knees.
Learning goals
- Experience a spine-unloading position after exercise.
- Notice and release tension in the neck and back.
- Build a short recovery routine for home or study time.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 25
- books: 60
Teacher tip
The usual mistake is too many books or none: check every head in the first minute. If you're short on books, folders or a folded towel work fine.
