Agility Ladder Footwork with Partner Passes
While working through the agility ladder with a footwork pattern, students catch and return passes from a partner standing to the side. This dual task forces them to coordinate feet and hands without looking down, which carries straight over to team sports.
How to play
- Lay out 5 agility ladders 4 yards apart. Put 5 students at each ladder: one fixed passer 2 yards to the side of the middle and four in line (2 min).
- Ball-free round: everyone runs the ladder twice with one foot per box and twice with two feet per box, eyes on the passer (3 min).
- Task one: with two feet per box, the runner catches a chest pass at box 3, returns it, then catches and returns another at box 7 (4 min).
- Task two: lateral pattern facing the passer, with passes on every odd box. The passer adjusts so every pass arrives at chest height (4 min).
- Switch passers every 3 runs. The group counts runs completed without dropping the ball or stepping on the rungs and records its best.
- Final challenge: the passer can throw a bounce pass or an overhead pass without warning; the runner adjusts their hands without stopping their feet (5 min).
Rules
- The runner doesn't stop to catch: the feet keep the rhythm.
- If the ball drops, pick it up and start again from outside the ladder.
- Safety: pass from 2 yards at medium speed; waiting students stay behind the start.
- Check that the ladder is flat and fully stretched before every round.
Variations
Easier
One pass per run with a foam ball.
Standard
Two chest passes per run with two feet per box.
Harder
Nonstop passes with two balls and a passer on each side.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: weave through a cone zigzag in a wheelchair while catching passes from closer.
- Visual impairment: use a bright or bell ball and a verbal cue before each pass.
- Higher level: in-in-out pattern; lower level: walk the ladder while catching.
Learning goals
- Coordinate feet and hands during a dual task.
- Keep eyes up while taking quick steps.
- Adjust pass speed for a moving partner.
Equipment for a class of 25
- agility ladders: 5
- balls: 5
Teacher tip
At first almost everyone stops their feet to catch, so start with few passes and build up. Have the passer call the runner's name to grab their attention.
