Adapted Leonese Wrestling: Ring Round-Robin with Judges
Students organize and compete in an adapted Leonese wrestling (lucha leonesa) round-robin across several simultaneous rings, with categories, ring judges, timekeepers and scorekeepers. They learn the basic rules of this traditional belt wrestling and take on organizing responsibilities.
How to play
- Explain the adapted rules: both wrestlers grip the opponent's belt with both hands, the grip can't be released, and you win by scoring two falls (the opponent touches the ground with anything other than their feet) or by leading at 90 seconds (4 min).
- Student organizers split the class into four rings by height and build, assign judges, timekeepers and scorekeepers and set up the round-robin sheet (4 min).
- Round-robin: three rounds of 90-second bouts in each ring; those not wrestling serve as judges or scorekeepers, and everyone rotates roles (18 min).
- Standings for each ring, closing salute and review of the organization: what worked and what to improve (4 min).
Rules
- Always wrestle gripping the belt and on mats; no grabbing the neck, head or legs.
- No lifting above waist height and no dropping onto the opponent.
- The ring judge stops the bout at any sign of risk, and that decision is respected.
- Categories are based on height and build, and no one is weighed in public.
Variations
Easier
One-fall, 60-second bouts with the teacher as the only judge.
Standard
Round-robin in four rings with 90-second, two-fall bouts and rotating organizing roles.
Harder
Organizers add a tiebreaker system and a final between the winners of each ring.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: joins the organizing committee and serves as head judge of a ring.
- Hearing impairment: judges use visual signals for start, fall and end.
- Injury or low fitness: 60-second bouts or participation only as judge and scorekeeper.
Learning goals
- Learn about Leonese wrestling as a traditional style from the Iberian Peninsula.
- Organize a competition with judge, timekeeper and scorekeeper roles.
- Wrestle with a belt grip while respecting the rules and the judge's decisions.
