Active Escape Room with Locks and QR Codes
Five teams have 25 minutes to open the padlock on a final box. At each station they complete a cooperative physical challenge that unlocks a QR code with a PE-themed puzzle; each solved puzzle gives one digit of the combination.
How to play
- Tell the story (a locked training lab), form five teams and explain that each station's QR code is under a cone and can only be checked after the challenge is done (3 min).
- Station rounds: the team completes the challenge (carrying hoops without hands, 50 ball touches without a drop, a synchronized jumping circuit, a group balance pose, a blindfolded relay guided by voice), scans the QR code and solves the puzzle before rotating; about 5 minutes per station (25 min).
- With all five digits, the team tries the final padlock; each wrong try means 10 squats for the whole team before trying again (2 min).
- Wrap-up: what role each person played, how decisions were made and what conflict came up (5 min).
Rules
- Check the QR code only after finishing the challenge: fair play is part of the grade.
- One phone per team, carried by the tech lead; no one runs with it in hand.
- Solve puzzles as a team, without searching online.
- In the blindfolded relay, the guide never lets go of their partner, and everyone walks, not runs.
Variations
Easier
Puzzles are multiple choice with three answers.
Standard
Five stations with a challenge and a puzzle, and a 25-minute limit.
Harder
Cut the time to 20 minutes and include heart rate and Borg scale calculations in the puzzles.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: challenges have an accuracy version (throwing into hoops, passing) instead of jumping.
- Hearing impairment: the story and rules are written on the first card.
- Autism: has a fixed role, like puzzle reader, and knows the station order in advance.
Learning goals
- Cooperate to solve movement challenges under time pressure.
- Apply PE knowledge to solve problems.
- Manage roles and conflict within a team.
Equipment for a class of 25

- tablets or phones: 5
- padlocks: 1
- cones: 15

Teacher tip
Injured students can act as station monitors and hand out the QR codes; otherwise leave the cards under the cones and trust fair play. Make sure every code works offline, for example by embedding the text directly in the QR code.
