A Thousand Ways to Move Gym
The motor room is set up as an open landscape of foam blocks, wedges, hoops, a tunnel and fabric. Kids explore freely and answer the teacher's challenge questions, discovering many ways to climb, get through, roll and jump.
How to play
- Set up 4 areas: a mountain of foam blocks and wedges, a hoop path, a fabric-covered tunnel and a low bench with mats.
- Sitting at the door: "Today the gym is all yours. You can go anywhere, always carefully" (1 min).
- Free exploring: kids move through all the areas with no instructions. You watch and go to anyone who is holding back (5 min).
- Tambourine and a challenge question: "Who can climb the mountain without using hands?" Everyone tries it their own way (2 min).
- New challenges every 2 minutes: "How many ways can you get through the tunnel?", "Who can roll off the bench?" (6 min).
- Closing circle: each child shows the silliest way they found and the group tries it (4 min).
Rules
- Take care of others: no pushing or jumping on anyone.
- Come down from the mountain and bench sitting or rolling.
- If someone is in a spot, find another space.
- When the tambourine sounds, stop and listen.
Variations
Easier
Free exploring only, with you nearby and very simple challenges ("Who can lie down on the mat?").
Standard
Free exploring followed by challenges every 2 minutes.
Harder
Double or partner challenges: "Can you both get through the tunnel at once holding hands?"
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: challenges accept the child's own way, and one area is wheelchair accessible.
- Autism: the child can stay in a quiet area with the fabric and tunnel as long as needed.
- More skilled: challenges with extra conditions; less skilled: floor-level challenges with no height.
Learning goals
- Freely explore movement possibilities.
- Find their own solutions to a movement challenge.
- Move safely while sharing space.

Teacher tip
Don't give away the answers: let kids discover them and name them out loud when they appear. The free time at the start matters as much as the challenges.
