7v7 Soccer: Low Block and Eight-Second Counter
A 7v7 soccer game where one team defends deep in its half and, after winning the ball, has eight seconds to score on the counter. Students work on compact defending, the defense-to-offense transition, and quick decisions.
How to play
- Place cones 22 yd from each goal (the block zone) on a 55 x 38 yd field; make teams of 7 plus a spare team that referees and times (2 min).
- Organize (3 min): the defending team forms two lines of 3 in its zone and shifts like an accordion while you move a ball by hand.
- Attack vs. the block (2 x 7 min): defenders pressure only inside their zone. After a steal the referee starts the stopwatch: a goal within 8 seconds is 3 points, an attacking-team goal is 1, and after 8 seconds the ball goes back to the attackers.
- Switch roles every 7 minutes; the spare team replaces the team that has played longest.
- Group talk (3 min): who broke out first, and how many passes did it take?
Rules
- Defenders stay in their zone until they win the ball.
- Nobody pushes a countering player from behind.
- The referee counts the last three seconds out loud.
Variations
Easier
12 seconds for the counter.
Standard
8 seconds and 3 points for a counter goal.
Harder
5 seconds, and the first pass after the steal must go forward.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: fixed anchor in the middle of the block who makes the first pass.
- Autism: gets a written note with his or her spot and who to pass to after a steal.
- Lower fitness: plays the back line and only makes the first pass.
Learning goals
- Keep a compact block that shifts toward the ball.
- Go from defense to offense with forward passes in seconds.
- Judge when to counter and when to keep possession.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Soccer balls: 6
- Goals: 2
- Pinnies: 21
- Cones: 12

Teacher tip
The block is easy on the legs but the counter is exhausting, so rotate forwards early. If attackers get stuck, ask for quick switches of play.
