7v7 Soccer: Fullback Overlap 3v2 on the Wing
3v2 waves in a wing channel where the fullback overlaps around the outside of the winger to cross, followed by a 7v7 game. Students work on timing the overlap, committing a defender, and crossing.
How to play
- Mark a 13-yard channel on each wing from midfield to the end line; set a goal with a goalkeeper and two fixed finishers (2 min).
- Demo (2 min): the inside midfielder passes to the winger, who dribbles inside to pin the defender while the fullback runs around the outside to receive and cross.
- 3v2 waves (8 min) alternating wings; rotate attacker, defender, line. An overlap goal is 3 points, any other goal 1; if the defense wins it and dribbles to midfield, 1 point.
- 7v7 game (8 min): center defenders cannot enter the channels; a goal from a channel cross counts double.
- Debrief (2 min): when should you overlap outside, and when should you play a give-and-go inside?
Rules
- The fullback goes only when the winger dribbles inside.
- The goalkeeper comes out arms first, and finishers pull up before reaching him or her.
- No slide tackles.
Variations
Easier
3v1 in the channel with a thrown cross.
Standard
3v2 with the overlap and protected channels.
Harder
A third defender chases from behind 2 seconds after the first pass.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: fixed finisher or first passer.
- Hearing impairment: the winger signals the fullback's run with an open hand.
- Fitness: the fittest student plays fullback, the least fit inside midfielder; swap every two waves.
Learning goals
- Time the overlap with the winger's dribble.
- Commit a defender by dribbling at him or her.
- Choose a cross, cutback, or shot based on the defense.

Teacher tip
The most common mistake is the fullback leaving early and arriving flat-footed: mark a cone where the run starts. Keep spare balls by each line.
