7v7 Soccer: Defending Corners with a Mixed Zone
A 7v7 soccer set-piece drill where the defense protects its goal on corner kicks by combining players in fixed zones with man-to-man marking. Students work on defensive organization, communication, and attacking the ball in the air or on the ground.
How to play
- Set up a goal with a goalkeeper and cones marking three zones in the box: near post, middle, and far post; teams of 7 (2 min).
- Explain (3 min): three defenders hold one zone each and attack any ball that lands in it; two others mark the most dangerous attackers, and one closes down the kicker.
- Corners (2 x 6 min): each team takes 8 corners per turn; a goal is 2 points for the offense, a clearance out of the box 1 point for the defense, and a controlled breakout to midfield 2 points.
- The offense may play the corner short, along the ground to the near post, or lofted to the far post; the defense does not know which is coming.
- Debrief (3 min): which zone was under the most pressure, and who lost his or her mark?
Rules
- No pushing or holding when jumping; nobody uses arms to lean on an opponent.
- The goalkeeper comes out calling "Keeper!" and everyone else gets out of the way.
- Lofted balls are kept to about head height to avoid hard head clashes; finishing with the foot or chest comes first.
Variations
Easier
Corners thrown in by hand and zone defense only.
Standard
Mixed zone with three zones and two markers.
Harder
The offense may add one more player to the box each corner, and the defense decides on the spot who marks him or her.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: holds the near-post zone, closest to the goalkeeper, or takes the corners.
- Autism: his or her zone is marked with a cone of a chosen color and stays the same all drill.
- Lower fitness: is the defender who closes down the kicker, with little movement.
Learning goals
- Organize corner defense combining zone and man-to-man.
- Communicate and attack the ball in your own zone.
- Break out with control after a clearance.

Teacher tip
On balls in the air, stress safe technique and do not allow jumping with a raised elbow. Rotate kickers so everyone defends.
