4-on-4 Volleyball: Tips and Roll Shots
Four-on-four volleyball game where hitters don't always swing hard but choose between a short tip over the block and an off-speed roll shot into the gaps. Students work on smart attacking, reading the defense, and accuracy.
How to play
- Three narrow courts and six teams of 4 with a rotating referee. Place two hoops on each side: one just behind the net area and one in the middle of the back court (2 min).
- Demo: the tip uses stiff fingertips, over the block, to the short area; the roll shot uses a full swing but slows the wrist and adds topspin, sending the ball deep (3 min).
- Drill: a teammate tosses a high ball to the hitter, who alternates tips and roll shots aiming for the hoops. A defender tries to read it. 6 balls per hitter, then switch (5 min).
- Game to 11: a shot that lands in a hoop is worth 2 points; play is open, hard hits allowed too (8 min).
- Wrap-up: when did a tip work, and when did a roll shot? Each team shares one situation (2 min).
Rules
- Tips are played with fingertips; no open-palm pushes or holding the ball.
- Hoops only give double points if the attack was a tip or roll shot.
- Safety: defenders do not dive on the floor to dig a tip.
Variations
Easier
Defenders don't move until the ball crosses the net, and the hoops are bigger.
Standard
Game to 11 with double points for a tip or roll shot that lands in a hoop.
Harder
The hitter shows a signal before jumping, and the defender can ignore it if they spot a fake.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student attacks without jumping from the net, and the short hoop moves closer.
- Autism: give a card with two clear attack options and practice them separately beforehand.
- Lower skill: the ball is tossed and the hitter only tips without jumping.
Learning goals
- Choose between a tip and a roll shot based on where the defense is.
- Perform accurate off-speed attacks into open areas.
- Read the opposing hitter's cues to defend better.
Equipment for a class of 25

- Nets: 3
- Hoops: 6
Teacher tip
Stronger students tend to always swing hard; the hoops make them look before hitting. For tips, remind the defense that someone has to cover the area behind the block.
