4-on-4 Volleyball: Setter Dump Decision Game
Four-on-four volleyball game where the setter can surprise the opponent by sending the ball over on the second contact when they spot a gap. Students work on the setter's decision-making, reading the opposing block, and defending against the dump.
How to play
- Three narrow courts with nets at regulation height or a bit lower. Six teams of 4 and a rotating referee. Each team names a setter for each game (2 min).
- Demo: the setter at the net, facing zone 4, pushes the ball with the left hand or two fingers over the net into an open spot, usually behind the blocker (3 min).
- Drill: a teammate tosses a free ball, the team passes, and the setter decides between setting and dumping. On the other side, a defender in zone 3 tries to read it. 6 balls, then switch roles (5 min).
- Game to 11: a point won on a setter dump is worth 2, but if the opponent digs it and wins the rally, it is worth 2 for them (8 min).
- Wrap-up: what did the setter look for to decide? Each team shares one cue (2 min).
Rules
- Only a front-row player can attack on the second contact.
- The ball must be pushed or tipped cleanly, never caught or thrown.
- Safety: front-row players don't jump for the same ball without calling it.
Variations
Easier
The opposing defender stays still in their zone and the setter just looks for the gap.
Standard
Game to 11 with double value for a setter dump that wins or gets dug.
Harder
The setter may also attack with a soft jump hit in addition to the dump.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student sets without jumping, with a slightly lower net on that court.
- Hearing impairment: the team uses hand signals to show if there is a gap behind the blocker.
- Lower skill: allow catching the pass and tossing it to the setter.
Learning goals
- Decide when to attack on the second contact based on the opponent's defense.
- Read the block and defense before contacting the ball.
- Anticipate the opposing setter's dump as a defender.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Volleyballs: 6
- Nets: 3
- Cones: 12
Teacher tip
Don't let the dump become the only play: if a setter uses it every time, remind them it works because it's a surprise. Praise good decisions even if they don't win the point.
