3x3 with Analysts: Points per Possession and Turnovers
While two teams play 3x3, another team acts as the analytics staff and records possessions, points, turnovers and type of finish. From that data they calculate points per possession and give the team they watched a numbers-based tactical tip before the second half.
How to play
- Explain the sheet: log each possession with its result (1- or 2-point basket, free throw, miss, turnover), and points per possession = points / possessions (4 min).
- First half of 5 minutes: two teams play while two analysts per team record on paper or in a spreadsheet on a phone (10 min, with two playing shifts).
- Analysts calculate points per possession and turnover percentage and give the team a 30-second tip backed by one number (4 min).
- Second half of 5 minutes applying the tip, with the same analysts; compare the data from both halves and rotate roles for the next game (10 min).
- Wrap-up: each group says whether the tip improved their points per possession (2 min).
Rules
- A possession ends with a basket, a turnover or a defensive rebound by the opponent.
- Analysts do not talk to players during play.
- The tip has to include a number, for example “you lose 4 out of 10 possessions on the post entry pass.”
- Play with basic 3x3 rules and self-called fouls.
Variations
Easier
Only record baskets and turnovers, without the type of finish.
Standard
Full possession logging, points per possession and a data-backed tip.
Harder
Add tracking by player to work out who produces the most points per possession with the ball.
Adaptations
- Writing difficulties: uses a tally sheet by category instead of writing text.
- Limited mobility or injury: serves as lead analyst and presents the data to the team.
- Autism: keeps a fixed role, analyst or player, for the whole game and uses a sheet with icons for each result.
Learning goals
- Record game data systematically.
- Calculate and interpret a team's points per possession.
- Make tactical decisions based on data.

Teacher tip
Run a one-minute practice log before starting so everyone understands when a possession ends. Teams are usually surprised by how many turnovers they commit: use it to talk about pass selection.
