3v3 Mini-Volleyball with Bonus Hoops
A 3v3 mini-volleyball game with hoops on the floor of the other team's court: if the ball lands inside a hoop, the point counts double. Students must look at the other side before sending the ball, find open spaces, and cover weak spots on their own side.
How to play
- Mini-volleyball courts about 30×15 feet with a net or rope at 6.5 feet; on each side, place 3 hoops in the back corners and the middle of the front zone (3 min).
- Teams of 3 in matching pinnies; serve underhand from the back line, and each team gets up to 3 touches to send the ball over.
- A regular point when the ball lands on the other side; two points if it lands inside a hoop or touches one as it lands.
- Players may stand on their own hoops to defend them, but no one may catch the ball at any time.
- Games last 5 min with a serve rotation after each point won; after each game, teams switch opponents and the teacher moves the hoops (4 games, 20 min).
- Between games (30 seconds), each team decides which hoop to target and who covers each zone.
Rules
- No player may touch the ball twice in a row.
- Don't touch the net or rope; if you do, the other team scores.
- Call "Mine!" and no one dives on the floor to save a ball.
- Keep score out loud, and the team giving up a double point confirms it by raising a hand.
Variations
Easier
Allow catching the first touch and move the hoops closer to the net.
Standard
Up to 3 touches with no catching, 3 hoops per side, and double points inside a hoop.
Harder
Each team must use 2 touches, and a hoop only counts double if the last touch was a set.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays in the front zone with the rope at 5 feet on their side, and their touch always counts as one of the required touches.
- Hearing impairment: game changes are signaled by raising a pinnie, and teams use hand signals to call for the ball.
- Lower skill level: their team may catch one ball per point.
Learning goals
- Read the other court to send the ball to the most open area.
- Organize the team's defense by splitting up zones.
- Follow the modified rules and the agreed scoring.
Equipment for a class of 25
- lightweight volleyballs: 4
- low nets: 4
- hoops: 24
- pinnies: 24
Teacher tip
Move the hoops every game so students don't rely on one single shot. Ask "Where was the open space?" after double points.
