3v3 Mini-Volley With the Setter Pinnie
3v3 mini-volley where the second contact always goes to whoever wears the setter pinnie. The pinnie changes hands on each rotation, so everyone gets to run the offense.
How to play
- Teams of three on mini courts of about 6 x 6 m per side. Explain the setter's job: stay near the net, take the first pass, set up the third contact (4 min).
- Cooperative play: both teams try to keep the ball going with pass-setter-send and count how many times it crosses the net (6 min).
- Scored 3v3: a point only counts if the winning team used the setter on the second contact. When a team wins back the serve, the pinnie moves to the next player clockwise (12 min).
- Switch opponents and play a second game the same way (6 min).
- Discussion: what does it take for the setter to get to the ball easily? (2 min).
Rules
- Only the setter may take the second contact; if they can't reach it, the team can play it over in two, but that point doesn't count.
- Call "mine!" before contact to avoid collisions.
- Hand over the pinnie without arguing, even when your team is winning.
- Stray balls stay outside the court until the next rally.
Variations
Easier
The setter may catch and throw.
Standard
Setter uses fingertips or forearms, no catching.
Harder
The setter must set overhead, either jumping or from a marked zone near the net.
Adaptations
- Fear of the ball: with the pinnie they may catch and throw; without it, they play with a soft ball on a calmer court.
- Limited mobility: always the setter in a marked zone, and the team must get the first pass to them there.
- Students who are deaf or hard of hearing: replace "mine!" with raising an arm before contact.
Learning goals
- Understand the setter's role on a volleyball team.
- Direct the first pass to the setter.
- Share roles fairly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- pinnies: 10
- volleyballs: 5
- elastic cords: 5
- cones: 20
Teacher tip
Use pinnies in a different color from the team pinnies so the setter stands out. The usual problem is the strongest player touching everything: the point rule fixes it without lectures.
