30-Second Tutorial: Teaching a Pattern on Video
In pairs, students record a 30-second video explaining a basic strength pattern with three key points, one common mistake and its fix. Videos are swapped and another pair rates them with a rubric, so students learn technique and communication at the same time.
How to play
- Show a sample short tutorial and hand out the rubric: technical accuracy, clarity, mistake and fix, and safety (3 min).
- Each pair chooses a different pattern and writes the script on the card: opening line, three key points, mistake and fix (7 min).
- Rehearse the movement and record; three takes maximum (10 min).
- Swap videos: each pair watches another pair's tutorial, tries to follow it and scores it with the rubric (7 min).
- Final discussion of the two best communication ideas (3 min).
Rules
- Only people who have given permission appear on video, and faces are not shown if they prefer.
- Videos are not posted outside the school's platform.
- The technique shown must be safe, with a light load or none.
- Ratings are given in writing using the rubric and respectfully.
Variations
Easier
The script is half done and students only fill in the key points.
Standard
Own script and 30-second video with one mistake and its fix.
Harder
The video also includes a regression and a progression of the pattern.
Adaptations
- Hearing impairment: the tutorial includes captions or on-screen text.
- Shyness: may handle filming and voice-over without appearing on camera.
- Limited mobility: chooses an upper-body or core pattern that can be shown seated.
Learning goals
- Sum up the key technical points of a basic pattern.
- Communicate movement instructions clearly and briefly.
- Evaluate others' work with a rubric.
