30-Second Speed Jump with a Partner Counter
In pairs, one student jumps rope with a running step as fast as possible for 30 seconds while the partner counts right-foot contacts, just like a school speed jump event. Students work on foot speed, efficient technique, and beating their personal best.
How to play
- Make pairs: a jumper with a rope and a counter with a worksheet and pencil; pairs line up along the court, 10 feet apart (2 min).
- Technique: wrists close to the hips, small turns, and a low running step; try 3 sets of 10 seconds without counting (3 min).
- Teach counting: count only right-foot contacts; the counter says the numbers quietly and writes down the total (2 min).
- First test: the teacher starts and stops with the whistle; 30 seconds, then switch roles (3 min).
- Active rest for 2 minutes with slow two-foot bounces while the counter gives the jumper one technique tip (4 min).
- Second 30-second test for each student and compare with the first score (3 min).
- Wrap-up: each student figures out their improvement and writes a goal for next class (3 min).
Rules
- Count only right-foot contacts; misses don't subtract, but you continue from where you stopped.
- You compete against your own score, not your partner's.
- Keep 10 feet between pairs and never walk in front of a jumper.
- If you feel dizzy or very tired, stop and tell the teacher.
Variations
Easier
Shorten the test to 20 seconds and allow two-foot jumps.
Standard
Two 30-second tests with a running step, counting the right foot.
Harder
Go for a 60-second test with pacing, or try double unders at the end.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: swing the rope at the side of the body as fast as possible while the partner counts turns.
- Hearing impairment: start and stop by lowering and raising a colored pinnie.
- Fitness level: less conditioned students choose 20 or 30 seconds and jump with both feet.
Learning goals
- Increase jumping speed using economical technique.
- Record and compare their own score objectively.
- Give useful feedback to a partner.
Equipment for a class of 25
- individual jump ropes: 13
- stopwatch: 1
- worksheets: 25
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is turning from the shoulders and jumping too high, so keep cueing "wrists and low jumps." Save the worksheets to repeat the test at the end of the quarter and show progress.
