3-on-3 Wash Drill
A 3-on-3 practice game where each cycle starts with a serve and continues with a free ball sent in by the teacher; a team only earns a big point by winning both rallies. Students practice transition from pass to attack and staying focused so they do not give away points.
How to play
- Half a volleyball court per side, trios in colored pinnies, and waiting teams behind the end line (2 min).
- Rally 1: team A serves and the point is played with up to three touches per side.
- Rally 2: right away the teacher sends a free ball to the team that did NOT win rally 1, and another point is played.
- If one team wins both rallies, it earns a big point; if they split, it is a 'wash' and nobody scores.
- The first team to 3 big points stays on and a new trio comes in. Play about 15 minutes with continuous rotation (3 min debrief at the end).
Rules
- The teacher sends the free ball only when the previous rally is over and the team is ready.
- Up to three touches per side, with no doubles or obvious lifts.
- Waiting teams retrieve balls only from outside the court.
Variations
Easier
Allow a catch on the second touch and serve from 20 feet.
Standard
Two rallies per cycle, with a big point only for winning both.
Harder
A big point requires winning three in a row: serve, free ball, and down ball.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play the setter spot at the net or be the one who sends free balls.
- Hearing impairment: a visible scoreboard with colored cones and a visual start signal.
- Developing players: group trios by level and allow one bounce on the pass.
Learning goals
- Link a pass, a set, and an attack in live play.
- Stay focused across back-to-back rallies.
- Organize as a team to cover the court.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyballs: 6
- net: 2
- pinnies: 24
Teacher tip
Pace is everything: the free ball should come in as soon as the previous ball drops. Call both the big and small scores out loud so students understand the system.
