2v2 Carousel: New Partner Every Game
Three-minute 2v2 mini-games on eight small fields; after each game one player from each pair moves on and forms a new pair. Tons of touches, simple decisions and everyone plays with everyone.
How to play
- Set up eight 12 x 8 m fields with two-cone goals 2 m wide (3 min).
- Pairs on each field; explain the rotation: the player in a pinnie (or the one the teacher points to) moves up one field clockwise (2 min).
- Six 3-minute games, with 20 seconds to rotate between them (18 min).
- Wrap-up: each student names who they enjoyed playing with and what that partner did well (2 min).
Rules
- No keepers: goals only with a ground ball between the cones.
- Restart from your own line after each goal.
- No contact and no slide tackles.
- Nobody chooses partners: the rotation decides.
Variations
Easier
Wider goals and 2v1 with a neutral player always attacking.
Standard
3-minute 2v2 with rotation.
Harder
Goals only after a pass from your partner in the opponent's half.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: a fixed field with a bell ball where arriving pairs play at a calmer pace.
- Limited mobility: a fixed field where partners and opponents play walking.
- Low fitness: may sit out one game as that field's referee and rejoin the next.
Learning goals
- Make quick pass-or-dribble decisions in 2v2.
- Adapt to different partners.
- Keep ball involvement high.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soccer balls: 8
- cones: 32
- stopwatch: 1
Teacher tip
Number each field with a large cone so the rotation is clear. Typical issue: slow changeovers; count the 20 seconds out loud.
