Your First Touch in Slow Motion: Video Self-Assessment
In groups of four, each student is filmed on three gentle receptions and then reviews their first touch in slow motion with a checklist. It brings heart rates down while students reflect on technique and set one specific goal.
How to play
- Go over the checklist: scan before receiving, open body shape, chosen surface and how far the ball ends up after the touch (2 min).
- Each student receives three soft passes while a partner films from the side (3 min).
- Sitting in a circle, they watch the clips in slow motion and mark each item on the card as achieved or needs work (4 min).
- Each student writes one sentence with their top improvement goal for the next lesson (1 min).
Rules
- Only students who give permission are filmed, and all clips are deleted at the end of class.
- Feedback is about technique, never about anyone's body or personality.
- Passes are soft and on the ground: this is a cool-down.
Variations
Easier
Review just one item: where the ball ends up after the touch.
Standard
Four-item checklist and one written goal per student.
Harder
Compare the clip with one of a professional player and describe the difference.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: a partner describes the clip and the student rates how the reception felt.
- Students who do not want to be filmed: act as analysts for another group and assess first touch by direct observation.
- Limited mobility: receives with the hands or the wheelchair footrest and is assessed on the same direction criterion.
Learning goals
- Analyze one's own first-touch technique with objective criteria.
- Use technology responsibly for learning.
- Set a personal improvement goal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tablets or phones: 7
- cards: 28
- balls: 7
Teacher tip
Keep the cards: at the end of the unit, film again and compare whether the top goal was reached.
