You Go, I Go Partner Fitness Relay
In pairs, one partner runs a lap around the playground while the other does a bodyweight exercise at a station and counts reps; a high five means switch. It builds endurance and strength at the same time, with a shared partner goal.
How to play
- Mark an 80–100 m (about 90–110 yd) running loop with cones around the playground and set up 5 stations in the middle with task cards: squats, jumping jacks, plank shoulder taps, curl-ups and side hops over a line.
- Form pairs and give each pair a starting station (about 2–3 pairs per station). Explain the system in 3 minutes.
- On the signal, partner A runs a lap while partner B does the station exercise and counts reps.
- When A returns and high-fives B, they switch: B runs and A works, adding their reps to the pair's total.
- Each station lasts 3 minutes. On the signal, the pair remembers its total and rotates clockwise to the next station.
- After all 5 stations (15 min), each pair adds up its reps and chooses which station was hardest.
Rules
- The working partner keeps going until they get the high five.
- Always run outside the cones and in the same direction.
- Only reps done with good form count.
- No pushing while running; pass on the outside.
Variations
Easier
Shorten the lap to 50 m and make each station 2 minutes long.
Standard
80–100 m laps and five 3-minute stations.
Harder
Add a cone zigzag to the lap, and the pair tries to beat its total in a second round.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student does a shorter lap in a wheelchair and uses upper-body exercises at the stations.
- Hearing impairment: signal station changes by raising a colored cone as well as blowing the whistle.
- Different fitness levels: each pair may choose the easy or hard version of the exercise shown on the card.
Learning goals
- Combine endurance and strength work in a single game.
- Sustain continuous effort for several minutes.
- Work with a partner toward a shared goal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 10
- task cards: 5
Teacher tip
Pair students with a similar pace so no one waits too long. Make sure each task card shows a picture and two levels of the exercise.
