How to play
- Each pair gets a deck of cards and puts it face down (1 min).
- Card round: flip one, for example 'stretch your wrist flexors and write your name in the air with the other hand' or 'slow-motion shoulder circles to a count of ten without losing your partner's rhythm' (5 min).
- Everyone picks the card that felt best and repeats it for 30 seconds, paying attention to the sensation (1 min).
- Quick debrief: which area felt most loaded, and should we add something to next lesson's warm-up (1 min).
Rules
- Gentle stretching, no pain and no bouncing.
- The challenge is about control, never range: no competing over who stretches farther.
- If a card bothers you, discard it and draw another.
- Work standing or seated, never with weight on the hands.
Variations
Easier
Stretches only, no extra challenge.
Standard
Stretch with a control challenge from each card.
Harder
The pair invents a new card and adds it to the deck for the next group.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: every card can be done seated.
- Blind or low-vision students: a partner reads the card and demonstrates through light touch if welcome.
- Wrist injury: drop the forced-flexion cards and keep the free-mobility ones.
Learning goals
- Unload the joints that carry weight when inverted.
- Connect joint sensations to the lesson's load.
- Suggest improvements to your own warm-up.
Equipment for a class of 25
- challenge cards: 15
Teacher tip
Handwrite the cards on cardstock; 10–12 challenges is plenty. The usual mistake is turning it into a flexibility contest: stress that control wins, not reach.
