How to play
- Observer tips: move slowly, freeze as soon as the animal lifts its head, don't stand out against the skyline, and don't get closer than you need to (2 min).
- First stalking round: a lookout sits facing away 20 m off, next to a cone. When they turn, anyone caught moving steps back five paces (2 min).
- Second round: whoever touched the cone becomes the lookout, and now anyone caught goes all the way back to the start (2 min).
- Walk back to line up: everyone says what gave them away (rushing, noise, laughing) and why in the wild you should stop before an animal feels threatened (2 min).
Rules
- Walking only; anyone who runs goes back to the start.
- The lookout turns whenever they want, but no nonstop spinning.
- Disputes go to the lookout, no arguing.
- Stay silent during rounds.
Variations
Easier
The lookout claps once before turning.
Standard
Lookout turns at will.
Harder
Students must arrive in lines of three, moving in sync.
Adaptations
- Visually impaired: plays lookout and detects movement by sound.
- Wheelchair users: rolls forward in the chair; play on a smooth surface.
- Ankle injury: plays a seated lookout.
Learning goals
- Cool down with a self-control game.
- Learn respectful ways to approach wildlife.
- Stay focused and quiet as a group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 4
Teacher tip
It works best on grass or dirt, where footsteps are quieter. The usual problem is it turning into a race; stress that the winner is whoever controls themselves best, not whoever's fastest.
