Wheelchair Basketball Without Wheelchairs: Seated Shooting and the 14-Point Lineup
A technical and tactical lesson on wheelchair basketball using fixed chairs instead of sport wheelchairs: seated shooting and passing with no leg drive, plus building lineups with the real classification point system. It takes the sport seriously without faking wheelchair movement.
How to play
- Intro: in wheelchair basketball each player has a class from 1.0 to 4.5 based on functional ability, and the five on court can't add up to more than 14 points (3 min).
- Seated shooting station: fixed chair 2 m and 3 m from the hoop, five shots per distance, logging makes; arms and trunk only (8 min).
- Seated passing station: trios with chairs in a 4 m triangle, chest and overhead passes without standing (6 min).
- Lineup design: each group gets ten fictional player cards with class and strengths and builds two legal 14-point lineups for two game situations (9 min).
- Debrief: which lineup each group would pick to protect a lead and why (4 min).
Rules
- Fixed chairs without wheels, back legs against a wall or held by a teammate.
- Nobody stands or rocks to shoot.
- Rebounds: the next in line walks to get them, never under the hoop while someone shoots.
- No lineup goes over 14 points.
Variations
Easier
Shoot from 2 m only and lineups from four-class cards.
Standard
Shoot from 2 and 3 m and lineups for two situations.
Harder
Shoot from three angles and lineups that also handle a forced sub due to fouls.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: shoots from their own chair and acts as the group's technical adviser; if they play the sport, they can explain their class if they wish.
- Student with a finger injury: does the passing part with a soft ball and the tactical design.
- Student who struggles with math: cards use colored chips per point to add up visually.
Learning goals
- Shoot and pass without leg drive.
- Understand functional classification and its point cap.
- Make tactical decisions under real constraints.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 8
- chairs: 8
- classification cards: 30
- hoops: 4
Teacher tip
If a local wheelchair basketball club can lend sport chairs, use them in another lesson with a coach; rolling office chairs aren't safe to play in. The usual mistake is arching the back to reach the rim: move to 2 m or use a lower hoop.
