What Would You Call? Walking Ref Huddle
While walking in a circle, students watch borderline plays reenacted in slow motion and decide what they would call. They reflect on rules, fair play and respect for officials.
How to play
- Walking in a circle, two volunteers reenact a borderline play in slow motion and everyone shows the signal they would give (3 min).
- Quick discussion in place: offensive or defensive foul? Who got to their spot first? (2 min).
- While stretching calves against the wall, each student names one call from today they thought was fair and why (1 min).
- Partners put equipment away while agreeing on one rule for respecting officials next lesson (1 min).
Rules
- Reenactments are in slow motion with no real contact.
- Respect opinions even when you disagree.
- No naming anyone to criticize their officiating.
- Only the person holding the ball speaks.
Variations
Easier
The teacher gives two possible calls and the group picks one.
Standard
The group decides freely and explains why.
Harder
Each volunteer reenacts a play from the lesson and the class must cite the exact rule.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: sit facing the teacher, and questions are written on a portable whiteboard.
- Students with visual impairments: a partner describes the reenactment as it happens.
- Shy students: may answer with the referee signal instead of speaking.
Learning goals
- Apply the rules to specific game situations.
- Support a decision respectfully.
- Appreciate how hard officiating is.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 1
Teacher tip
Prepare two or three typical plays before class (verticality, charge, traveling on the catch). The usual problem is the discussion running long, so cut it at two minutes and save the question for next time.
